MD5 File Checksum (Legacy)

Calculate an MD5 hash locally for compatibility with older published checksums.

How to use

  1. Select the file and calculate its MD5 hash.
  2. Compare the 32-character hexadecimal digest to a legacy reference, but use SHA-256 or SHA-512 where security matters.

About these formats

MD5 creates a 128-bit digest but is vulnerable to collisions. It is not a secure authenticity check and is included only for compatibility.

Browser limitations

MD5 must not be used to validate files against malicious manipulation. Input size is capped at 512 MiB to avoid browser resource exhaustion.

Frequently asked questions

Is MD5 safe for security?
